The success of the XUV500 has cemented Mahindra in the luxury SUV market and now it is aiming higher with the Rexton W. Ssangyong which is now owned by Mahindra, has the Rexton in its portfolio. The Rexton will be positioned higher than the XUV500 and will compete with the Captiva or even the Fortuner. The Rexton was displayed at the Auto Expo and it received a lot of interest from the potential buyers. Of all the products in the Ssangyong stable this will come first to the Indian market.
A SUV with a luxurious yet simple cabin, all of the Rexton’s controls are positioned for the driver’s convenience and offers three rows of seating making room for seven occupants. Innovative folding mechanisms also allow the second and third row of seats to be folded away to leave a vast luggage are. The Rexton offers high standards of appointment, quiet on-road performance, car-like handling, and yet rugged off-road capability. It can be configured to seat seven people all facing forwards, or as a five seater for more luggage space. Though space for the third row of seats can be a little cramped.
The Rexton encompasses all of SsangYong’s off-road knowledge and experience into on robust package, providing all weather, all terrain transport. The looks of the Rexton are typical old-school SUV but the recently showcased refreshed version did impress us a lot! The Rexton is a hugely popular SUV in Korea and has beefy styling with massive wheel-arches and lots of chrome thrown in. The upright headlamp shape flanks SsangYong’s distinctive grille to emphasis Rexton’s power, while the rear view design houses a convenient flip up glass tailgate. In terms of looks, the updated Rexton W gets new projector headlamps with LED-surrounds, LED fog-lamps. The new chrome-lined grille is more aggressive now and looks bigger than before. The big wheel arches further beef up the looks.
The Rexton W offers excellent fuel efficiency of 13.7 km per litre (2WD A/T), improved over 20% as compared to the existing Rexton, as well as output performance of maximum 152 bhp and maximum torque of 365 Nm. It also ensures driving efficiency as maximum torque is kept at the engine driving area and is most frequently used during actual driving (1,500~2,800 rpm). There will be a manual gearbox as well as an automatic option.
The Rexton W uses a triple-layer steel frame and chassis structure with high rigidity applied, with the best frame production technology achieved by Ssangyong Motor. This helps minimize the impact of vehicle crash on passengers, maximizing safety. You will get ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and ARP (Active Roll over Protection) TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) UWS (Ultrasonic Warning System) too! Expect this to be yet another success for Mahindra
