Fire detection and prevention is an important function of the earthquake engineering, and since life and property is concerned, active research is being carried out on this important science. Several techniques are being used, including modern construction techniques and the fire detection systems.

Fire Due To Earthquake

Earthquakes may cause extensive damages to life and property depending upon its magnitude, but studies have revealed that at times, destruction due to the fires instigated by earthquakes, are comparable to the losses due to the earthquakes. Reduction of losses due to fires after earthquakes necessitates meticulous planning, development, and implementation of comprehensive fire protection programs. These programs should include the fire prevention equipment, improvements in building construction in accordance with the design parameters recommended to manage earthquakes, fire detection and alarm systems, and other modern techniques developed to reduce the losses due to earthquake fires. Proper management of combustibles, reliable water supply lifelines, and organized fire services will minimize the losses to life and property.

Construction Technologies

The construction of buildings and other infrastructure should be carried out keeping in view the latest studies on the performance of steel structures damaged due to earthquakes, including the load bearing capacities that should be able to withstand the expected magnitude of the seismic waves. The initiation and distribution of fire, within the building and the adjacent structures should be restricted, movement of the occupants to leave the premises should be facilitated, and the protection of rescue teams should be ensured. A methodical approach is essential to consider the disruption in water supply lines after an earthquake, and the instigation of independent fires, for which adequate arrangements are necessary to avoid the spread of fire.

Fire Detection and Alarm Systems

Functions of Fire Detector and Alarm Systems

The primary function of the fire detection and alarm systems is the timely identification of a developing fire through manual or automatic systems, and notifying the occupants and the fire services of an imminent fire. These systems may also be employed to shut down air handling equipment or special operations, and the initiation of the automatic suppression systems. The selection of the fire detection and alarm system will be influenced by several factors including the mandatory standards, building construction and its usage, value of contents in the building, and cost of the systems.

Types of Fire Detector and Alarm Systems

Automatic fire detectors operate on the principle of the reproduction of the human senses concerning smell, touch or sight. Smoke detectors can distinguish a fire while in the initial stages, and thus provide adequate response time to the rescue team for the control of fire. These are used in applications where a large number of human beings are involved and the content value is high. The smoke detectors are expensive, but when properly chosen and designed, are extremely reliable. Thermal detectors were introduced in the nineteenth century, with several improvements being used today, with a high rate of reliability. These devices of the fixed temperature category operate when the room temperature reaches a programmed temperature. Alternatively, an unusual rise in temperature is also identified. Flame detectors duplicate the human sense of sight, and the sensing mechanism recognizes the fire, and activates the fire alarm panel. It is exceptionally reliable and normally used in the refineries, mines, and loading platforms for fuel.
