As per the guidelines of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), starting from February 1, 2011 all merchants in India are required to collect an OTP (One Time Password) in addition to information written on the Credit cards for all transactions done over phone (IVR). All banks in India are providing OTP directly to their customers for a secure transaction over IVR.

Dear Customer,

Please note:

As per the guidelines of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), starting from February 1, 2011 all merchants in India are required to collect an OTP (One Time Password) in addition to information written on the Credit cards for all transactions done over phone (IVR). All banks in India are providing OTP directly to their customers for a secure transaction over IVR.

OTP brings multiple benefits for you and you will feel more secure while doing IVR transactions over phone. With OTP you are fully safe of fraudulent transactions made through Credit Card. So, use OTP and enjoy secure purchases over the phone (IVR). Just call your bank and get an OTP for your Credit Card.

Any doubts? Read below:

What is One Time Password or OTP?

OTP is a numeric password which is valid for one time use only. As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines starting from February 1, 2011, all merchants in India are required to collect an OTP in addition to information written on the Credit cards for all transactions done over phone (IVR). OTP is issued by the bank directly to the customer. The process of obtaining the OTP is described in later part of this document.

When do I require an OTP?

The OTP is required starting from February 1, 2011 onwards whenever you make a purchase by calling MakeMyTrip Call Center over phone. For such purchases you need to dial in the OTP in addition to your Credit Card Number, Expiry Date and CVV.

How can I obtain an OTP?

To obtain the OTP you should first register you mobile number with your bank. It is advisable to get it done as soon as possible (before February 1, 2011). The process of registering the mobile number varies from bank to bank; hence its best to call the customer support of the bank that issued your Credit Card to know more.

Once your mobile number has been registered with your bank, you can obtain an OTP by following the process described in the table below. Your bank will send the OTP to the registered mobile via SMS.

Can any one please let me know if there are charges for generating OTP. I called HSBC customer care today and they told that there are 500 rs. charge for getting OTP and I've to write an application and I've to visit the nearest branch.

Can some one help me please if this is a legal practice.

There should not be charges for such things as HDFC & Citi are providing facility by SMS also.

Sometime Call Center guys don't have much details on such new things or it may be some misunderstanding.

Thanks for the information Jimit. I called once again to HSBC customer care and the executive confirmed that OTP can be generated online without any charges. There is no SMS service as on date. The OTP is valid for 6 hrs/1 transaction.

Well to get the OTP the sms is charged Rs 3. I think that is pretty rediculous. It even so happened that the Otp did not work

Once again customers are being looted by mobile operators. Most banks require customer to send a sms to a specific number to obtain OTP number. Mobile operators are charging customers heavily about 5 rupees to send such sms to specific number.

This is totally unfair to charge this much amount just to receive OTP number. Banks should provide customers numbers on which sms charge is normal(50p to 1rupee) per sms.

I believe obtaining OTP should be free of charge. Few banks also allow generating OTP on their websites.

Their is NO PROPER WRITTEN COMMUNICATION REGARDING THE PROCEDURE OF 'ONE TIME PIN' GENERATION through SMS from the banks to their clients for all transactions through the IVR system. The banks must facilitate such procedures well in advance before implementation for the convenience of their clients.

THE 'OTP' GENERATION SHOULD NOT COST ANYTHING TO THE CUSTOMERS.IF THE CUSTMER HAS TO SHELL-OUT RS 5/- OR RS 3/- FOR EVERY SMS TO SPECIAL NUMBERS FOR GENERATION OF 'ONE TIME PIN',THEN ITS A LOOT ONLY. THE RESERVE BANK OF INDIA SHOULD COME INTO ACTION AND SAFE GUARD THE INTERESTS OF THE CUSTOMERS.

In the name of so-called security, credit/debit card online transanctions are being made more and more difficult and complicated discouraging sizeable population from using the credit/debit card. For example booking with IRCTC is already time consuming and complicated and the OTP requirement becomes disgusting. Using CITIBANK cards is the most discouraging of all the banks.

I wasted Rs. 13 trying generating one OTP and still I did not get any sms. This is crazy. Customer care & ivr tells me to try after 2 hrs again.. SMS Rs. 3 per sms. and IVR is Rs. 2 per min. I have a TATA SBI card. So frustrating this whole process is.
