But, he did not pay heed to any of the remarks made by these people and, with rapt attention, he would read the Geeta from beginning to end. Eventually, Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu cam to visit the Ranganatha Temple and saw the Brahmin reading the Geeta with great concentration and devotion. Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was greatly attracted by this Brahmin. He stood at the back of the temple, listening attentively. After completing his reading of the Geeta, the Brahmin stood up and saw Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the Extraordinary Divine Personality, WHo was tall, with arms down to His kneed and a golden complexion. Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu expressed His satisfaction, 'I am very glad to hear your recitation of the Geeta.'
The Brahmin said, 'I have no right to read the Geeta, but it is the order of my divine master. He said, 'You should read the Geeta completely, from beginning to end, and only after that may you take any food.' I cannot understand any of the verses because I have no knowledge of Sanksrit.'
Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said, 'You say that you do not understand the Geeta, but while you were reading the Geeta you were weeping. Tears were flowing from your eyes--why? If you did not understand the Geeta, why were you weeping?'
The Brahmin replied, 'I have never divulged my heart to anyone, but You are a divine personality. It is not good to conceal my heart before You. It is true, I do not understand the Geeta, but while I read the Geeta, I see before me the Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna working as a servant, having been subdued by the devotion of Arjuna. He is the Supreme Lord, the Lord of all lords, the Lord of infinite brahmandas and infinite vaikunthas. Seeing His Bhakta-Vatsalya Murti (His form of profound affection for His devotee), I cannot control the flow of tears from my eyes. It happens spontaneously. It is very surprising that the Supreme Lord is working as a driver and His devotee is giving Him orders.'
Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said to the Brahmin with great assertion, 'Your reading of the Geeta is crowned with success, as you have devotion to Sri Krishna.'
Many people have distorted the teachings of the Geeta to fulfill a vile mentality. Once, a younger godbrother of our Guru-maharaj, Parampujyapad Srila Bhakti Kumud Sant Goswami Maharaj, went to Kashmir during the time of British administration. At that time, the Maharaj of Kashmir was Hari Singh. He arranged a meeting, including Swami ji as one of the royal guests. The invitees were all dignitaries, rich people, and many of them owned tea gardens. The Maharaj of Kashmir also owned tea gardens. Srila Sant Maharaj, is a very spirited person. He does not hesitate to tell the truth. In His speech, He said emphatically, 'Those who are virtuous should not commit sins. They should not gamble, they should not engage in illicit connections with women, they should not slaughter animals and they should not take intoxicants of any kind, includng even tea.'
The tea-garden owners were thunderstruck upon hearing this. They thought that they had committed a mistake by inviting Swamiji and said, 'We are advertising tea, and Swamiji has come to destroy our business!'
One of the tea garden owners came to Swamiji and said, 'Swamiji! You have spoken against tea, but it is glorified in the Geeta.'
Swamiji said, 'I have gone through the Geeta several times. I have not seen it.'
'Yes, it is there.'
In India the word for 'tea' is 'cha'. The tea garden owner showed Srila Sant Maharaj a specific verse from the Geeta,
'sarvasya chaham hridi sannivisto
mattah smritir jnanam apohanam cha
vedais cha sarvair aham eva vedyo
vedanta-krid veda-vid eva chaham (Sree Geeta, 15.15)
'In the form of 'cha', 'tea', I have entered into the heart of every living soul. And lastly, Krishna Himself says 'I am cha' (chaham), meaning, 'I am tea.'
This is certainly not the meaning. The meaning has been twisted here to serve the ulterior motive. This sort of commentary will misguide the reader and be of no benefit. In the Sanskrit language, the word 'cha' means 'and'. The real meaning of this verse is, 'I reside in the heart of everyt living being as the Indwelling God. The living being's memory and knowledge, previous precepts and concepts as well as forgetfulness of these things, have all come from Me. All the vedas substantiate Me as the only object to be known. I am the author of the Vedanta and I am versed in the Vedas.'
Sri Shankracharya has written this glorification at the ends of the Gita (Sri Shankracharya's Gita-mahatmyam, 4), 'The Geeta should be rightly read with one-pointed devotion, for the satisfaction of Sri Krishna. No other scripture is necessary if one take shelter of the Geeta. The Geeta emerges from the holy lips of Sri Krishna and is one with Him.'
It is not material sound. In material sound, you will find that the thing referred to by a sound is different from the sound itself. If you utter: 'water, water, water,' the water word is not the water-thing. The word 'water' refers to a thing understood to be water. In this world you will find a difference between the word 'water' and the object referred to by the word 'water.' But Krishna and the Name of Krishna are one and the same. Sri Geeta and Sri Krishna are identical. So, by taking shelter of the Geeta we can come in contact with Sri Krishna. We have gone through the contents of the Geeta, we have read the Geeta, but despite this, we still have no devotion to Sri Krishna. This is not actual reading. If we actually read the Geeta, we will obtain devotion to Sri Krishna.
