The iPhone is one of the most popular smartphones on the market, and its popularity seems to grow year-on-year with each new iPhone device they release. This year is going to bring us the iPhone 5, yet another highly anticipated iPhone from Apple.

One of the things that make the iPhone so popular is how easy it is to use, that was one of the key things they had in mind when creating the device. They wanted anyone to be able to pick it up and be able to use it with ease – they certainly achieved that goal. But, there are many shortcuts, tips and tricks that I use regularly with my iPhone 4S which other iPhone users don’t seem to know about, so I thought I’d share them here with you.

If I miss any tips or tricks that you think deserve a mention, then feel free to add them to the comments below this post!

Let’s get started…

1) Close Open Apps to Conserve Battery Life

In the earlier versions of iOS there was no option to close Apps, once they were open they remained open which slowed your device down. Now you can close Apps that you aren’t using. To do this, double tap your “home” button to show the open apps in the dock area of your iPhone, then tap and hold the app icon of the app you wish to close and you’ll see a delete symbol appear in the upper-right hand corner, click that and the App will be closed; freeing up memory to keep your device running quickly.

Tip: Transfer Contacts from One Phone to Another Easily

2) Add PDFs to iBooks

You don’t need to spend money on books in iTunes to have them in iBooks, you can use PDFs too! Download your PDFs and add them through iTunes to sync into iBooks, or visit the PDF in Safari or send it via an E-Mail to yourself and you can save it in iBooks from there.

3) Camera Shortcut

If you see something you need to take a quick snapshot of, you can get much quicker access to your camera from the “sleep” state by double clicking the “home” button and then tapping the camera icon that appears to the right of the “slide to unlock” text. This will open the camera app straight away ready for you to take your snapshots.

4) Add Folders to the Dock

Since iOS 5 you have the ability to add folders to your dock, to create a new folder just drag one app on-top of another and iOS will put them both inside a folder which you can name and move around your home-screen just like an App.

5) Add Emoticons to your Keyboard

You can get cool emoticons directly on your keyboard, to set them up go to Settings’ > ‘General’ > ‘Keyboard’ and tap ‘International Keyboards’, then select ‘Add New Keyboard’ and chose ‘Emoji’. You will now have the emoticons added on your keyboard, when you’re typing a text or email, tap the globe next to the space bar and you’ll see all the cool emoticons, tap it again to return to English.

6) Dismiss auto-corrections in E-mail, SMS & Notes

It can be frustrating when the auto correct feature tries to ‘correct’ you when you’re typing, to dismiss the auto-correction you don’t need to hit that tiny ‘x’ next to the word, you can actually tap anywhere on the screen to dismiss it.

7) Location Based Reminds

I’m sure you’re aware that you can use Siri to set reminds, but did you know that you can set location based reminds? For example “Remind me to pickup the shopping when I leave here” or “Remind me to call mum when I get home” and Siri will remind you accordingly.

8) Make Playlists on the Move

Gone are the days where you need a computer and iTunes to create playlists, you can now make them directly on your iPhone wherever you are. Simply open the Music App, go to ‘Playlists’ and then ‘Add New Playlist’, you can then select single songs, entire albums or all songs by a particular artist and add them to your new playlist.

9) Get Definitions of Words

If you come across a word that you don’t know the meaning of in a text, e-mail, safari or eBook / iBook, you can tap and hold the word and then hit the ‘Define’ button to get a definition of the word.

10) Find a lost or stolen iPhone

Providing you are signed up with (it’s free), you can use the Find My iPhone service to locate your iPhone anywhere in the world as long as it’s connected to the internet via 3G or WiFi. The Find My iPhone app will show your iPhones position on a map, you can even send a message to display on the iPhones screen, have it play a sound, set a password lock and even remote wipe all of your data from the device.

Hopefully there was at least one or two tips you picked up here that you can make use of with your iPhone, and if you have any tips, tricks or shortcuts that you use regularly on your iPhone that I haven’t mentioned on my top 10 list, then please share them in the comments below!
